fabulous friday : louvulle. the capital of kentucky.

I've learned a thing or two about louisville in my six years here (!!!!!) Some of them good, some bad. If you're thinking about visiting us, here are a few things you should know.
1. It's louavulle
One syllable. Real fast. louavulle. not louis-ville. not louieville. not loua-ville. one syllable, just like it's spelled. (oh, wait...) If you can't get it, just stick with "The Ville."

2. We have a local joke. Be forewarned.

Here's the joke:

person one: How do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky? ...Louis-ville? Louiville? Lou-a-vulle? louville?
person two: [says how he or she pronounces it]
person one: I pronounce it Frankfort.

Very smart alack-y, I know. But there it is. Don't be caught off guard. the capital of kentucky is frankfort, not louisville!

3. It's the smallest big town you'll find. Ever.
I don't remember the last time I went into downtown and didn't run into someone I knew. I don't know how it happens but you will run into someone you know.

So always dress like you're going to meet someone, because you will, whether you want to or not.
4. Construction.
It's a thing, and it's always everywhere downtown. Get used to it, or...be late.

5. Derby's a thing.
A big thing. A thing with a month of build up (kicked off by the biggest firework show in ever.) A thing where everyone and their sister had better wear a hat to (and maybe have a backup, just in case.) A thing where local businesses are all shut down for the day.

I don't know if there has ever been so much build up for so short a thing. UofL gets out in April, to avoid traffic, because after all, couldn't run into the derby.

And I watch it every year. and I love it every year. It's pretty exciting. (yes, I also watch Preakness and Belmont and hey this year it payed off!)

One last thing? That's why there are horses at everywhere.
6. UofL or UK?
Choice wisely. You're life may (and seriously might) depend on it.

7. On Sports...
For a team with no professional sport, locals are rather into them. college basketball (see no. 6), horse racing (see no. 5), and home of the largest baseball bat making factory (cool, but kind of a one timer.) Btw, in case you were wondering, we're also big Reds fans. (Go Frazier!)

8. It is impossible to get lost in the airport.
But be wary of the parking lot. For reals, though, the airport is so tiny, and you get off a plane and you all leave through the same terminal thing. If you go to pick someone up, it is impossible to miss them, unless they jump out a window. It's kinda cute, actually.

9. The freeways are a piece of work (see no.4)
I mean, besides construction, they're a confusing mess. and I don't even drive yet!

10. We have the best apple pick farm in the ever.
Also, it's a winery. and cheesery. and they have great christmas trees, apple cider, pumpkins, and basically anything else you can name...all of it U-Pick! But other than that we don't have anything to do with Indiana. That right there was a bonus tip.

11. We're not trying to kick you out. Honest.
In fact, we would love for you to stay a long, long time! You see, those "Cincinnati-83-miles-exit-8"(those numbers were made up, if you couldn't tell,) are not to try to get you to leave. We're just big friends with Cincinnati. And seriously, while you're staying here you need to take a day trip up there, too. I mean, they have a baseball team, and an IKEA and a Container Store, and a Chipotle, and like basically everything Louisville doesn't have. Except for population. We're still ahead of the game as far as population goes. I know, looks can be deceiving. Google it.

12. Weather can be crazy beautiful.
We have this cute little saying, "if you don't like the weather in kentucky, wait five minutes." It's very true.

13. Entertainment
Forth Street Live & KFC YUM! center for music, Louisville Palace Theater for whatever they're showing (like hitchock's in summer), Frazier Museum for history, Science Center for science, Louisville Zoo for animals, and a personal favorite, Shakespeare In The Park (longest running free shakespeare production in the country - 55 years!!) for well, Shakespeare plays all summer long! You know where to go for sports (see no. 5, 6, 7,) and also check out the walking bridge. it's beautiful at night.

So there you have it. You know how to get here (fly, you can't get lost.), you know the tourist attractions (derby, college sports, louisville slugger museum, and cincinnati), you know to build in an extra ten minutes for construction, you know to pay close attention when asking for directions back to louavulle. What's stopping you from visiting?

So now I'm curious...What are some lovable quirks about your town?
