So, as I'm sure you've noticed, I'm really jazzed up for summer. Summer brings so many amazing things, including memories (not to be too cliched.) But how can you do anything in summer without music? Music makes or breaks a summer, I think. Plus, I love having songs that remind me of my summers. But this post is more about change. Recently Caroline from Un-Fancy posted this super sad thing:

Ever heard the song from Mama Mia, "Our Last Summer"? Well, besides the title, it really relates nothing to us (as in, my two older sisters and me). Well, also, the fact that we may all have [small] crushes on Colin Firth (he was a really perfect darcy!!) But last year that was sort of our theme song. Our official theme song (or not so official, but an obvious choice, if we had to pick) was So Young by the Corrs. Starting with an all-night Hitchcock marathon, our summer went on from there: A Phantom of the Opera showing in Cincinnati, a trip to CA for one sister, a forth of July party, a self-funded new york trip (including Phantom of the Opera, Yankees/Reds game, and a trip to the met) for another, a trip to california with my dad for me, a Reds/Red Sox game, neighborhood picnic, lots of pool time, grilling, beach boys, & parties. And it was wonderful. And we have a song for every moment.
Last year my sister put together a summer playlist, which was a blast. This year we don't have an official one, but songs are slowly falling into place. While last year our theme was something along the lines of, "Eat, drink, be merry [for tomorrow we go off to college.]" This year it's more along the lines of growing up, thinking about all the opportunities we've had (as a family and on our own,) our futures, our goals, and what we will do to achieve them. And spending every moment we have together (which included putting off this blog post for a ten o'clock trip to the library to drop of books with my sister, just for the quality time together.)
A few months ago I was talking to my oldest sister about music. While the songs about breakups, or losing people, or whatever, are sad, the saddest songs for me are about growing up. About people fading out of our lives. Those people we thought would stay forever, well, are moving on with their lives. The songs about things changing...Moves, graduation, college, relationships fading into the past. Maybe because that's where I am,
right now, but those hold so much more weight for me. I'm hating change right now, yet it's one of the only things that
doesn't change.
So. This summer I'll be working three days a week, my oldest sister (may or may not) be taking a job downtown, and my oldest sister will be working two jobs. This coming fall, I'll be in my second year of high school, Jess (my older sister) will be a freshman (taking a required calculus classes at eight in the morning. thirty minutes away.), and my oldest sister will be a Sophomore. We'll all be doing different things, seeing little of each other.
This is going to be our first summer really
apart, besides a trip here and there (never longer than two weeks), we've spend our whole lives together. We'd all been homeschooled (before my sister went away to college) our whole lives, and rewind six years, I don't think we'd ever spend a night apart.
Ever. Everything we've been through, we've been through
together. We've been on all the same road trips. Been to all the same beaches. We have the same mannerisms. Listen to the same music (though we don't always
like all the same stuff.) Watch all the same movies. Read all the same books. Quote all the same things. We make the same faces. We shared almost everything we've ever had or been a part of -- church, meals, summers, pens, siblings, clothes, shoes, beds, whatever. And now that's breaking. Changing. In the past.
But you still have summers, right? No. No, actually we don't. Jess is going into chemical engineering & she has to take summer classes. Plus two summers she has to interns in an out-of-town place business things stuff. ( She's thinking New York. I'm thinking I'm going with her. )
All that to say, this summer is going to be really, really hard for us. Music will help us get through
So now I have songs that I feel like are perfect for summer. and I'm putting them here. sorry for all the sap.
